Welcome!

Global Communities is the University of Maryland, College Park’s premier global engagement living and learning program. Through Global Communities, students become:

Aware: of global issues and diversity through cultural programming and academic experiences in their residence hall and in the Washington, DC community.

Empowered: with knowledge and skills that allow them to interact with peoples from a variety of backgrounds and to thrive as citizens of the world.

Active: as agents of change in their immediate places of influence and beyond.

Students in Global Communities live in Dorchester Hall, creating a community of approximately 90 students interested in learning more about the world and its numerous cultures. Together students take a one-credit colloquium course each semester and have the opportunity to take part in a number of intercultural events, such as visiting an embassy, hearing a speaker on protecting human rights, completing a high ropes course, or going on a sustainability camping trip. After two years in the program, students earn a Global Competencies notation on their transcript and the pride of knowing they called home a program that has been enhancing the UMCP college experience for nearly twenty years.
