How to Apply

Please note the following points when you consider applying to Global Communities:

  • Participation in a one-credit colloquium per semester is required. View Global Communities courses.
  • Global Communities students are required to live in Dorchester Hall (or study abroad) for the duration of the two-year program.
  • Selection is based on experience and/or expressed interest in international and intercultural issues and activities.
  • Knowledge of a foreign language or prior travel experience is NOT required.
  • You must be guaranteed on-campus housing by the office of Resident Life to be considered for Global Communities. Resident Life requires all residents of Dorchester Hall to purchase a dining plan.

Application Process

Step 1 - Housing

Incoming Freshmen: Return your invitation response card to the University Admission Office by the deadline noted on the card. Remember that your admission to Global Communities is contingent on your acceptance to Resident Life. You will need to confirm enrollment at the University of Maryland and apply to housing by the posted deadlines.

Students Currently Enrolled at UM: If you already live on campus, and are guaranteed housing by resident life, submit a Room Change Request Form to Resident Life. If you do not live on campus, apply for on-campus housing by logging into the Resident Life website and filling out a Housing Form.

Step 2 - Global Communities Application 

Submit an application to Global Communities. You can access the application online:

The most important part of the application is your essay in which you should outline why you want to join Global Communities and how you believe YOU could contribute to the diversity and activities in the program and in Dorchester Hall. For questions about cost, submission of the mandatory Housing Agreement, and residence hall services, please contact the Assignments Office of the Department of Resident Life, Annapolis Hall, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742. Application Due Dates

Students Currently Enrolled at UM:For best consideration, submit your application by March 1 for fall semester. Applications received after the date noted will be considered on a space-available basis.

Incoming Freshmen: Incoming Freshmen are invited to the program after being selected by the Global Communities selection committee. Selected students will receive an invitation via the Admissions Office.

Exchange Students: For best consideration, submit your application no later than a month prior to the start of the semester of your exchange. Applications received after the date noted will be considered on a space-available basis.
