Students typically complete one supporting area course per year while in the program. The supporting area courses for Global Communities come from a broad spectrum of schools and departments at University of Maryland. This enables most students to pursue their own academic interests while fulfilling the program notation requirements. Moreover, a large number of the supporting area courses fulfill CORE requirements.
Students may either select from a list of pre-approved Supporting Area Courses generated each semester or submit the syllabus for a course they believe meet the following criteria:
1. The course provides a theoretical foundation for the study of world politics, cultures, and economics;
2. The course examines in detail a specific world region, including its geographical, historical, and cultural landscapes;
3. The course offers instruction in a foreign language.
