Teach Abroad
What does it mean to teach abroad?
Teaching abroad can generally be broken down into three broad categories:
Teaching English, General Teaching and Teaching English for Specific purposes (ESP).Teaching EnglishThis most popular form of teaching abroad means teaching English as a foreign language to non-native speakers of all ages. Referred to as TEFL, TOEFL, TESL, TEOSL, most positions within this category include duties such as developing lesson plans, instructing multiple classes and evaluating students.
General TeachingGeneral teaching positions are available abroad both for U.S. teaching-certified and non-certified individuals. Most of these positions are at local private schools or international schools for the children of diplomats, members of the armed forces or expatriates.
Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
A smaller sector of teaching abroad is teaching English for specific purposes. This sector is geared toward providing instruction to adults for English language proficiency for use in a specific field such as science, business, health care, law, tourism or aviation.
