Getting Started & Planning Considerations 

When considering an international career or work abroad opportunity, there are a few items that you’ll want to keep in mind during your search:

  • In order to apply for an international job, you must have a well prepared resume or CV and cover letter.  Reference Other Important Considerations for more information.
  • A work visa will be required in almost all cases.  Reference Other Important Considerations for more information
  • Location: It is possible to complete an international internship and not even leave the U.S. With UM’s proximity to Washington D.C., there are many internship opportunities for UM students with many of the international organizations.
  • Finances & Costs: Review the information on finances and costs to determine a budget that will work for you and your international experience.
  • Timeline: Create a timeline so that you have enough time to make arrangements and prepare for your international volunteering experience.
