International Organizations

Use the following link for a list of Recognized International Organizations

Procedure

1. Obtain a written offer of employment from the international organization. The letter should be on the organization's letterhead and specify:

  • the start and end dates of employment
  • number of hours per week
  • address of the work place
  • who will supervise the student
  • amount of compensation
2. Fill out the Form I-765 in blue ink. Question 16 is (c)(3)(ii).
  • Two color passport photos (2"x2", write name and SEVIS number on back of both photos; must be taken within 30 days)
  • Call IES (301-314-1469) to make an appointment with an IES advisor. You will need to bring the following to your appointment:
      • Letter from the international organization
      • Form I-765
      • Passport & I-94 card
      • Current I-20
      • Photocopies of passport picture and expiration page(s) and I-94 card (front and back)
      • Photocopies of all previously issued I-20s
      • Check for $340 filing fee

*Note: Photos that do not meet the specifications will be rejected and will result in delays. IES recommends Campus Photographic Services located on 5201 Paint Branch Parkway, Suite 1117 (in the Patapsco building near the College Park metro station). Their phone number is (301) 405-0577. Hint: Do not wear white.

At your appointment with the IES advisor, you will receive a new I-20 that shows your request for employment authorization. After your appointment, you will need to send the following to USCIS:

  • Original Form I-765
  • $340 filing fee
  • Photocopy of the I-94 card
  • Photocopy of all three pages of the new I-20
  • 2 passport photos
  • Offer letter from the international organization
  • Photocopy of the passport picture & expiration date page(s)

If you live in Maryland, Washington D.C. or Virginia, send your application to:

USCIS
Vermont Service Center
75 Lower Welden Street
St. Albans, VT 05479-0001

*Note: Before sending your application, be sure to write "Employment with an International Organization" in the lower left-hand corner of the envelope to ensure it gets to the correct department.

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will be mailed to the address provided on the form I-765. Processing times erratically vary for the EAD; however, USCIS is allowed 90 days to process any application. Contact IES if you have questions or do not receive a Receipt Notice from USCIS within a month of sending off your application, or if you experience delays beyond 90 days of USCIS's last correspondence. You may begin working only after receiving the EAD from USCIS.
