International Transfer Orientation

The Office of International Services (OIS) organizes the International Student Orientation to answer questions that may arise as you make your transition to the University of Maryland and to help you complete the SEVIS Transfer process.

OIS has developed a condensed International Transfer Orientation program for students who have already been studying in a higher education setting in the U.S. You will have the option of attending the International Transfer Orientation (1 day) or the regular International Student Orientation (2 days). You will be able to register for classes earlier by attending the International Transfer Orientation. Your attendance at one orientation is required.

To Attend the International Transfer Orientation

Step 1: Make A Transfer Orientation Reservation

Transfer Orientations are usually held on Wednesdays during the summer.  Registration for this step of your orientation is done either over the phone at (301) 314-8217 or online at http://orientation.umd.edu/transferoverview.html. You should identify yourself as an undergraduate international transfer student.   The fee for Transfer Orientation is $106; there is a fee of $60 per parent if they choose to accompany you. The Orientation Office charges these fees to your student account early in the fall semester.

Step 2: Notify OIS

Once you have registered for Transfer Orientation, notify OIS about which date you will be attending by contacting the office at internationalservices@umd.edu.

Step 3: Attend Orientation

You will be required to attend an additional International Student session at the end of the day (4:00pm).  You should bring your immigration documents to the OIS session (current I-20, all previous I-20s, I-94, passport, visa).

Orientation includes:

  • Orientation to the Academic System at the University of Maryland
  • Visa and Immigration Status Issues
  • Immigration Documents Check

Documents to bring:

  • Admission materials
  • Immigration forms: passport, visa, I-94, all I-20s/DS-2019s
  • Proof of immunization
  • Descriptions of any course work you would like to use toward your degree in the U.S. and any other important documents

Since you are a transfer student, you currently have a SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 from your current school. If you have not done so yet, you need to complete the UMCP Transfer In Form to transfer your SEVIS record to the University of Maryland, College Park. If you plan to leave the U.S. over the summer, it is important to use the immigration documents provided by the University of Maryland, College Park (i.e. from I-20 or form DS-2019) upon your re-entry to the U.S.

Parking for International Transfer Orientation

During Orientation, a parking pass will be necessary to park on campus during the condensed orientation.  The Orientation Office for the University will provide a permit once you register.
