About Fulbright

The Fulbright Program aims to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs and thereby to increase the chance that nations will learn at last to live in peace and friendship.

Fulbright Enrichment Program

The Washington Fulbright Visiting Scholar Enrichment Program is one of six Fulbright Enrichment Programs located in major metropolitan centers in the U.S. The Program reaches out to an impressive group of Senior Fulbright Scholars from around the world to sow the seeds of international friendship as envisioned by the late Senator J. William Fulbright.

Housed in the Office of International Programs at the University of Maryland, the Program provides Visiting Fulbrighters in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. with opportunities to meet and share experiences with their Fulbright colleagues. We introduce them to aspects of American culture and society they might not otherwise see, and attempt to give them some insight into what makes our area and its people unique. These cultural insights benefit both the Visiting Fulbrighters and their American counterparts, and have helped build some enduring friendships that cross national and cultural boundaries.
Some of our recent events have included:

  • An afternoon of learning to cook and appreciate fine American Cuisine
  • A unique tour of Washington, D.C. that explores the symbolism of the citys design and architecture
  • A Chesapeake Bay ecology field trip led by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation
  • A private visit, lecture and dinner at Mt. Vernon
  • A Cajun feast, followed by Zydeco music and dancing
  • An evening dinner and cultural presentation at the Embassy of Malaysia
  • Opportunities to volunteer with local community service organizations
  • Thanksgiving in an American home

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, and conducted in association with the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. In the Washington, D.C. area, it is coordinated by Jeanine Greene with assistance from Linda Heckert.
