It is tax time again, and we know that many of you are preparing to file your U.S. federal and state income tax returns. The deadline for filing tax returns for the calendar year 2008 is April 15, 2009.
CINTAX is a web-based software program that allows you to prepare, and then print and mail in your federal Non-resident income tax return (1040 NR-EZ or 1040NR). The software asks you questions concerning your immigration status, your 2008 types/amounts of income and then produces, in PDF format, a completed federal income tax return for you to mail to the Internal Revenue Services. (Since you must print out, sign and then mail the tax form, you will need to access a printer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. CINTAX supports Windows 2000/XP/Vista (Internet Explorer and Firefox) or MAC OSX (Safari and Firefox). CINTAX does NOT support Internet Explorer on a MAC. Javascript must be enabled to use CINTAX.)
After collecting all your tax information, it usually takes about 30 minutes to complete your 2008 federal income tax form using the software. Please note that IES cannot provide email or telephone support for CINTAX. To log in to the software you will need a password. Passwords will be distributed via email by IES by mid-March.
Collect all your paperwork ahead of time [tax documents-W2(s), 1042S(s), 1099(s) and Immigration Documents - I-20, IAP-66/DS-2019 (for J's), passport, etc]. Please note that this software only produces non-resident federal tax returns. You will need to prepare your state tax return separately.
Students who are residents for tax purposes, please see the Frequently Asked Questions.
Non-resident tax filers can purchase individual tax passwords to CINTAX for $39.00 from the CINTAX website. Please note that the software should be helpful for most of the non-resident students and scholars on campus but be aware that if you have income from unusual sources or higher than usual income or otherwise feel that you need additional assistance with your taxes, you should seek professional tax advice from a qualified tax accountant.
International Education Services provides access to this software to users for informational and educational purposes and not as a substitute for advice obtained from the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) or a qualified tax professional. Users who have questions aobout their situation are advised to contact the IRS or a qualified tax professional. Each user is responsible for the accuracy of his/her income tax returns and any resulting penalties or interest.
