UK: Liberty, Slavery and the British Empire

July 2-23, 2008

HIST 219K/ HONR / CPSP, 3 credits

From the curry houses of East London, to the city’s surviving docklands, to the National Portrait Gallery and the Benjamin Franklin House, we’ll be out and about each and every day. In the evenings and on weekends students can sign up for optional theatre trips and sample the vibrant nightlife of London, the world’s most exciting city.

In total, we’ll spend 14 nights in London, as well as four nights in Bristol and two nights in Liverpool, the two port cities most closely associated with British naval power – and with British involvement in the slave trade. There, we’ll visit the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum, the International Slavery Museum, and the SS Great Britain, the world’s first great ocean liner.

Students will stay in college-style accommodation in the heart of London, Liverpool, and Bristol, and will travel by express train between these three English cities.
