Germany in the New Europe

Eligibility

The curriculum is designed for students who are highly motivated, both academically and personally, and who are seeking to actively engage in the challenges of a new learning environment. Applicants should have at least a 3.0 (B) academic average and the approval of an academic advisor. We are looking for energetic students from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Course Expectations

The academic program for this course is designed to help the student understand:

  • Major developments in German and European history and culture, especially as they have influenced politics and business in Europe since the end of World War II;
  • The concept of Europe and the formation of European Union economic, political, cultural and social institutions;
  • Issues of sovereignty, regionalism and democracy in Europe;
  • Business and economic issues in Germany and Europe;
  • The future of the European Union in the realms of business, politics, and culture;
  • Social and cultural movements and institutions.

The Program includes several day excursions to area cultural and historical sites such as the Prussian Hohenzollern Castle, Haigerloch (where an old beer cellar was used as an atomic research laboratory in World War II), as well as a long-weekend trip to Berlin, including a visit to the German Bundestag, Free University and the Berlin Wall museum. The course will be taught in English. German lessons will be provided.

GERMAN FOR TRAVELERS

For students who have been accepted into the Program, an optional 1 credit German for Travelers course (GERM319) will be available, starting in October, 2009 and taking place on UMCP’s campus.

Credits

Enrolled students will receive 3 Maryland resident credits for one of the following sections: GERM449B: Selected Topics in Germanic Studies / GVPT388T: Public Policy Internship Seminar / BMGT398B: Individual Study in Business / HONR348X: Germany in the New Europe.
