Understanding India

January 2-21, 2007

India, the world’s most populous democracy, is a complicated composite of distinct regional, religious, ethnic, and linguistic traditions. There are over 14 official languages; 80% of the population is Hindu, 11% Muslim, 2% Sikh, over 2% Christian. It is as well the birthplace of Buddhism and Jainism and has given refuge to Zoroastrians and Jews over the centuries. The layering of history in this 5,000 year old civilization is visible through the forts, palaces and mausoleums of a succession of imperial powers including Mughal emperors, Hindu Maharajas and British rulers. This 3-week Study Abroad course focuses on North India, surveying religious traditions and sites of historical importance. We will also visit cultural and educational institutions in several cities.
