The University of Maryland, in collaboration with the Consortium /University of Genoa offers a three- week, four-credit session in Genoa, Italy at the Centro Internazionale di Studi Italiani in Italian Language and Culture (ITAL 103 or ITAL 203). A three-credit independent study is also offered (ITAL 498).
As the capital of Liguria, one of Italy’s smallest regions and one of the most beautiful - with its lush vegetation, mild climate, rugged coast line and popular seaside resorts - Genoa offers students a great variety of experiences, ranging from its maritime history to the tasting of its great cuisine. Also known as Baltimore’s twin city, Genoa is a big, modern city with theatres, museums, restaurants, cafes, shopping centers and stores of every kind. It is a historic city, with medieval and renaissance palaces and streets. The port of Genoa has a renovated inner harbor with the largest aquarium in the Mediterranean. With its ideal location, at the center of the Italian Riviera, Genoa is close to Portofino and the Cinqueterre (Five Lands) which offer stunning views of Liguria’s rugged coast and its beauty.
The University of Genoa is one of the oldest in Italy. It dates back to the 13th century and became prominent for the study of Law, Medicine, Philosophy and Theology. At the present time, the University of Genoa has 11 faculties (colleges) and enrolls about 40, 000 students.
Students will stay in a pensione near the University of Genoa. This is hotel/dorm style-housing. Students will share a room. There is wireless internet available in the pensione.
Dr. Suzanne Branciforte is the Director of the Consortium and Coordinator of the Italian Language Program for foreigners at the Centro Internazionale di Studi Italiani.Author of Parliamo Italiano, a first year textbook for Italian language, Dr. Branciforte is Professor of Italian at the University for Foreigners of Siena and of Methodology of Teaching Italian to Foreigners at the University of Genoa.
