Congrats to Abigail Carroll and Mary Faddoul for getting accepting to The William Jefferson Clinton Scholarship program at the American University in Dubai. The girls will be spending one full term at the American University in Dubai and having the opportunity to expand their educational and cultural horizons by studying in the Arab world. Way to go!

Two Study Abroad alums named as first ever Philanthropy Fellows.  The program provides future leaders with the opportunity to gain professional experience, develop skills, and build a professional network. Congratulations to Cassie Surber, who studied abroad in Iceland with the Nordic Child and Family Health program, and Brendan McCormick, who spend a semester in Ireland via UMD's partner the University Studies Abroad Consortium.  Great job -- see where study abroad can take you!

 

UM Students and Alumni Awarded Record Number of Fulbrights!  See how many study abroad alums have parlayed their international experiences into admission to this prestigious program. Special congrats to former Peer Mentors Lydia Tukarski and Krissie Noto!  Where can study abroad take YOU?! 

 

Emily Burke was recently awarded a Boren Scholarship to study Turkish abroad.   Emily will graduate with History and Government and Politics major and a minor in Terrorism Studies.  Boren Scholarships are for students studying in areas deemed critical by the US Department of State.


Dylan Rebois was awarded the 2011 University Medal at the spring Commencement ceremony.  The medal honors the graduating senior who best exemplifies academic distinction, outstanding character and extracurricular contributions to the university or public communities.  A committed member of Engineers Without Borders, Rebois developed and led a team of 30 students in designing and constructing a sustainable youth center in Addis Alem, Ethiopia in January 2010. Two years ago, he worked with a team that designed and built a solar-powered drive system for water pumps in Dissin, Burkina Faso.  Congratulations!

Three of the four UM students awarded the Goldwater Scholarship are study abroad alums! Congrats!

  • Alexander Leishman: Aerospace Engineering, minor in Germanic Studies and International Engineering.  Studied in Germany winter 2009, did a program in Peru with Engineers Without Borders, and during winter 2010 at the University of Kassel in Germany.   
  • Katherine Manfred: Chemistry and Physics.  Studied a full year in Bristol, England via UM's partner USAC.
  • Ethan Schaler: Mechanical Engineering.   Studied abroad via the Global E3 program in Tohoku, Japan.
