This program is open to students in good standing from all majors, who are interested in exploring a multicultural experience with an academic focus on education. Diverse majors are encouraged to apply, as multiple perspectives with the student group also add richness to the educational experience for all.
This three-week intensive course is a study abroad version of the popular honors seminar in international and multi-cultural education, and will focus on the study of multicultural perspectives and issues both in the U.S. and other parts of the world. The course has been approved for CORE Diversity credit.
Students will be required to attend three four-hour class sessions prior to departure, during which they will participate in reflections on assigned readings and class activities relevant to the study abroad experience. While in the host country, students will participate in a variety of on-site school visits in three different countries, during which they will interact with administrators, teachers, and students. Overall, the course requirements include:
(1) a series of journal reflections that reflect their critical thinking about various aspects of the course experience;
(2) a group project on a topic of the student’s choice, conceptualized during week one and completed and presented with classmates during the first week abroad
(3) a final term paper, due one week after our return to the United States. There is also grading emphasis on active student participation in all course-related group activities.
