Study Abroad in Spain at the University of Alcalá
Based at the University of Alcalá, the Maryland-in-Alcalá program is open to all UM students, as well as students from other accredited American universities. Students on the program take language courses at Alcalingua, the Spanish language division of the University of Alcalá, in addition to three credits of coursework with Maryland's Resident Faculty Director. To complete their curriculum, students take two additional courses, choosing between four options: one or two additional content courses at Alcalingua, a credit-bearing internship or direct enrollment in a course at the University of Alcalá. In order to qualify for the program, applicants must have completed two years of college-level Spanish (or the equivalent).
The Maryland-in-Alcalá program is only available for the Spring Semester.
Situated 30 km northeast of Madrid and home to the second oldest university in Spain, Alcalá de Henares offers the hustle and bustle of a small city while providing an intimate snapshot of Spanish life. The birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, this historic city is known for storks nesting in the rooftops of University buildings, sidewalk cafés, and people-filled streets in the hours following siesta. Alcalá’s location right outside of Madrid provides students with easy access to surrounding Spanish cities such as Toledo, Salamanca, Barcelona and Valencia.
