Program Dates

Program dates for Spring 2009 are estimated as follows. Please note: Any significant changes to the program calendar will be communicated upon acceptance into the program.

Arrival in Spain: First weekend in January
Placement Exams at Alcalingua: January 7
Beginning of Alcalingua & Resident Director Class: January 8
Beginning of Direct Enrollment Courses at the University: February 9
Classes End at Alcalingua: March 20
Spring Vacation: Late March
Internship Placements Begin: Late March
End of Internships and Resident Director Class: May 1
Direct Enrollment Courses End at the University: May 29

Program Costs

2008-2009 Program Fees*

Spring 2009 - - - $7,895

*Includes tuition, orientation, student services, personal and academic advising, and excursions. This fee is paid directly to the University of Maryland.

A $500 non-refundable deposit will be due by October 24 in order to hold your place in the program. The remaining balance will be due in December.

Other Costs

Students on the Maryland-in-Alcalá program are responsible for paying their own airfare, room & board, and personal expenses while abroad. In 2008, airfare cost roughly $850.

Housing costs vary depending on the option chosen. The following is an estimate of housing costs for Spring 2009 (unless otherwise specified, all prices are monthly costs, in Euros):

  • Shared Apartment: €250-300
  • RESA residences: Single room - €510, Double room - €375
  • CRUSA residences: Single room - €395, Double room - €300
  • Homestay: €18 per day for breakfast only
    • €21 per day for two meals a day
    • €24 for full board (three meals per day)

Students opting for shared apartments or residences will also be responsible for paying for meals throughout the semester.

Students should plan to budget about $1,500 a semester for personal expenses.

Be sure to check the latest exchange rate when calculating expenses for the semester.

Financial Aid

UM students can use their university, state and federal financial aid towards study abroad expenses. As the Maryland-in-Alcalá program fee is charged directly to each student's account, students can also use the TERP payment plan when financing their study abroad experience.

Students from other institutions should check with their home financial aid office.

Maryland-in-Alcalá Scholarships

UM students on the Maryland-in-Alcalá program are eligible to apply for a Maryland-in-Alcalá scholarship. These scholarships are available for up to $1,000 and will be awarded to students based on academic background and financial need.

To apply, please complete a Scholarship Application and turn it in to the Study Abroad Office by October 15.
