During the program, students are expected to:

  • complete some reading (one novel and a handful of historical / theoretical essays) before departure; other short essays, stories, and poems will be read during the trip.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled events and discussions (40% of course grade).
  • keep a daily journal of their experiences (30%) and compose a series of short writing assignments that engage with the ideas/concepts of the course (30%).

Course readings, excursions, and discussions will be coordinated with festival events – theater and dance productions, art exhibits, musical performances, etc. We will visit the manuscript collection at the New South Wales State Library, attend lectures by resident historians and professional artists, and read a variety of literary and historical works to put our experiences in context.
