If you have chosen to study on a Maryland-sponsored short term program, or on the Maryland semester programs to London, Alcalá, Nice, Berlin, Shanghai, Haifa, or Rome you may apply directly to your program of choice following the instructions on the specific program´s website. You do not need to meet with a Study Abroad Advisor first but we are happy to answer any questions.
If you are considering other program options, once you have the three options that interest you most, contact the Study Abroad Advisor assigned to your geographic region of interest to schedule an individual advising appointment.
During Individual Advising, you will discuss the program options you have selected and determine whether credit can be transferred to Maryland.
If you are still considering your options and have not narrowed down your choices, you can contact a Study Abroad Office Peer Mentor. Peer Mentors are students who have studied abroad and are available to share their experiences and insights while helping you consider your choices. We have Peer Mentors who have studied in Australia, Italy, France, Spain, England, China, Denmark, India, and Germany. To contact a Peer Mentor, email saopeers@gmail.com and the Mentor from your region of interest will contact you to either set up a time to meet in person or assist you via email. This can be a great way to get a student's perspective on studying abroad, additional assistance choosing a program, and the real scoop on living and learning in another country.Study Abroad Advisors by Region

If you are focusing on programs recognized by Maryland but without any sponsorship or agreement, you should then decide on your first choice program out of those you have discussed with your Study Abroad Advisor. Next, complete the online ELF Application for Study Abroad. Within about a week, your Study Abroad Advisor will approve it to verify that Maryland can accept transfer credit from your chosen program. (He or she may contact you if the form is not clear or the program is not approved for transfer credit.)
Then you can go ahead and apply to your program of choice. If your program provider requires that a study abroad advisor complete an approval form, you can drop it off at the main Study Abroad desk and pick it up the next day.
Once you are accepted to your program, prepare to start your Permission to Study Abroad paperwork.
