Maryland in London

Study in London...One of the World's Great Cities

Due to high enrollment, the Maryland-in-London program is no longer accepting new applications for Spring 2010.

If you are looking to live and learn in one of the world's most vibrant, exciting, and globally important cities, Maryland-in-London is the program for you. Maryland-in-London is the University of Marylands oldest study abroad program and offers students an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in the cosmopolitan hub of England. London is a world leader in business and finance, fashion, art, theater, and music, and an ideal place to study history, politics, and literature.

Students participating in the Maryland-in-London program can enhance their in-class academic experiences by letting all of London be their classroom. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of everything the city has to offer, including:

  • Visiting Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
  • Taking in a film premiere at Leicester Square
  • Touring Kensington Palace
  • Strolling through London's beautiful parks
  • Viewing a world class soccer match
  • Exploring the birthplace of punk
  • Contemplating all that transpired in the Tower of London
  • Savoring a city that played a central role in Western history and culture

Beyond the city of London, all of the United Kingdom -- from the moors of Jane Eyre to the stunning beauty of the Lake District -- are easily accessible by train or bus.

Academics

Maryland-in-London features a partnership with London Metropolitan University, allowing students a full range of courses from which to choose. Participating students enroll in two types of courses:

  • At least two courses focusing on London and Britain, taught by University of Maryland adjunct professors. Examples include Art in London, British Politics, The London Stage, and The British Economy and Financial System.
  • One to three courses at London Metropolitan University. Students can choose from a wide range of disciplines, with options for virtually every major. London Met has recently renovated, state-of-art lab facilities with ample choices for students studying in the sciences, and equally diverse offerings in the liberal arts, social sciences, and business.

Eligibility

Maryland-in-London is open to all University of Maryland students, as well as students from other accredited American universities. There are often fewer than 50 participants on the program, which allows for a more personalized experience.

In order to qualify, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and demonstrate proficient writing abilities. Students can enroll in the Maryland-in-London program for the full year, or they can choose to study for the Fall or Spring semester.
