Program Costs

2008-2009 Program Fees*

Academic Year 2008-2009 - - - $14,800
Fall 2008 - - - $8,990
Spring 2009 - - - $8,990

*Includes tuition, orientation, student services, personal and academic advising, initial housing payment, and excursions. This fee is paid directly to the University of Maryland.

Initial Housing Payment: A portion of each students' program fee will be used to pay for rental agency fees and at least the first two months' rent in Nice. Students are responsible for paying the remainder of their rent directly to their family or landlord during the rest of their stay in Nice.

A $500 non-refundable deposit will be due by April 25 (for fall or year students) or October 20 (for spring students) in order to hold your place in the program. The remaining balance will be due in August (for fall or year) or December (for spring).

Other Costs

Students on the Maryland-in-Nice program are responsible for paying their own airfare, room & board, and personal expenses while abroad.

In the 2007-2008 academic year, airfare cost roughly $850. Housing costs vary between homestays and apartments. The rent for a homestay placement is 820 Euros a month for a single room (720 Euros for a double room). Homestays include two meals a day. Apartments typically cost between 350 and 500 Euros per month for a shared apartment. Food costs are higher for students staying in apartments, as meals are not included in the rent. Students staying in apartments should budget about $1,700 for food per semester. In addition, all students should plan to budget about $1,500 a semester for personal expenses.

Be sure to check the latest exchange rate when calculating your estimated expenses.

Financial Aid

UM students can use their university, state and federal financial aid towards study abroad expenses. As the Maryland-in-Nice program fee is charged directly to each student's account, students can also use the TERP payment plan when financing their study abroad experience.

Students from other institutions should check with their home financial aid office.

Maryland-in-Nice Scholarships

UM students on the Maryland-in-Nice program are eligible to apply for a Maryland-in-Nice scholarship. These scholarships are available for up to $1,000 and will be awarded to students based on academic background and financial need.

To apply, please complete a Scholarship Application and turn it in to the Study Abroad Office by October 15.
