The University of Maryland acts as a coordinator for the Russian Language and Area Studies program offered through the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). Most aspects of the program are administered by ACTR, and courses are taken at local host institutions in country. ACTR programs are designed specifically for students of Russian. Students are extremely limited in their ability to take courses outside of Russian language or culture, and are discouraged in doing so.
Students have the opportunity to study at Moscow International University in Moscow, the Russian State Pedagogical University (Gertsen Institute) in St. Petersburg or the KORA Center for Russian Language in Vladimir. Moscow and St. Petersburg are the first and second largest Russian cities, as well as the political, historical and cultural capitals of the nation. Students looking for a smaller city may prefer Vladimir.
The UM Study Abroad Office advisor for ACTR is Dr. Aggie Danielewicz.
