India: Child & Adolescent Development
Eligibility
This undergraduate course is intended for students interested in human development in a cultural context. Interested students from a wide variety of backgrounds are welcome to apply. Students must be highly motivated both academically and personally and be prepared to meet the demands of a challenging and rewarding new learning environment. Students must be adaptable and sensitive to cultural differences, as well as aware that they not only are representing the University of Maryland but also the United States of America as ambassadors of cultural exchange.
Course Expectations
This program is an intensive immersion program which not only includes formal classes but also field experiences in Indian schools and excursions to local and regional sites. Some reading is required before departure. While at the host University, students are expected to observe culturally appropriate behavior and to participate actively in classes, discussions, and field experiences.
Program Goals
The objectives of the course are to:
- Develop an understanding of child and adolescent development in a cultural context
- Develop cross-cultural communication with Khalsa College of Education students
- Learn about Punjabi culture
To realize these objectives, this three-week program will include:
- Daily lectures and discussions
- Daily structured reflections
- Visits to local schools
- Excursions to local and regional sites of historic and cultural significance
Orientation All students will attend a general pre-departure, orientation session at the University of Maryland. Students also should plan to meet individually with the Faculty Director before departure.
Credits
Accepted students will receive three (3) University of Maryland credits for
EDHD 498E Child and Adolescent Development: Cultural Perspectives.
