Academics

Eligibility

This program is open to students (and former students) planning a career in education, public health, child development, social services, or related fields, although students from many different backgrounds may apply. Preference given to students with a 3.0 GPA or higher and some Spanish (though not required). Participants need willingness to work, live with a poor family, and serve people living in poverty. While the hiking expedition to Guazapa is optional, applicants should be prepared to participate in outdoor physical activities.

Dr. Beckman would like to know your level of Spanish (if applicable – there is no language requirement for this program). When submitting your application materials, please specify your Spanish level in your personal statement using the scale below:

0 - virtually none
1 - a little
2 - can manage most conversations
3 - fluent - can translate

Course Requirements

Students are expected to attend four seminars prior to departure, complete some readings, and complete an online preparation program. While in El Salvador, students are expected to work side-by-side with villagers on projects designed to benefit an educational or community program, design and implement a personal or group project related to their area of interest, participate in group reflections, and maintain a journal. When they return to the United States, students will submit a brief paper summarizing their experience.

Throughout the experience, students are expected to be respectful of families, and observe culturally appropriate behavior.
