Engineering in Germany

Learn about Engineering in Germany through the exploration of German culture and language, lectures on the history of engineering in Germany and the German educational system, and visits to German industry, museums and historical sites.   

Itinerary

We leave on Friday, March 13, 2009, and arrive at Frankfurt Airport in Germany on March 14th. The group will travel by train to Mannheim where we will be based for the program.   After checking in at the student residences, there will be an orientation program followed by free time and then a group dinner that evening.  On Sunday there will be sightseeing and a guided tour of Mannheim and we will meet with students from the Hochschule Mannheim-University of Science and Technology.  Monday through Friday, the schedule will include survival German classes, guest lectures, industry tours, and trips to Heidelberg for a guided tour of the city and a visit to the historic castle and to Ladenburg for a visit to the Carl Benz House and Automobile Museum.   Students will also meet with engineering students and participate in a home visit as well as attend a regular university class.  Saturday’s schedule includes a trip to Speyer for a tour of the technical museum and the Speyer cathedral and an IMAX film.  Sunday, March 22, 2009, we return to Frankurt to catch our flight back to the United States.

Faculty & Staff

Dr. Gabriele Strauch, associate professor and undergraduate program director in the Department of Germanic Studies, is a native of Germany and her research is in German medieval literature. 

Ms. Jane Fines directs the study abroad programs for the A. James Clark School of Engineering and developed the Minor in International Engineering.
