Russia: St. Petersberg

June 15 - July 10, 2009

ARCH 678S / URSP 705 (4 credits)

This is four week, four credit summer program in St. Petersburg, Russia for graduate students in Architecture and Urban Studies and Planning.  This summer program will be held at and with the cooperation of the St. Petersburg State University, School of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPSUACE).  The courses offered will be ARCH 678S (4 Credits) and URSP 705 - Community Planning Studio (4 credits).  

The focus of the course is on urban design, architectural history, planning, and historic preservation. Historic Preservation and Real Estate students, as well as graduate students from other universities are welcome to participate.  In addition, the class will include a team of Russian architecture students. 

Faculty & Staff

The architectural component of the program is lead by UMD faculty Garth Rockcastle and Brooke Wortham-Galvin.  Professors Howland and Falk, will lead the planning team.  In addition, we will have the full-time support of Professor Vladimir Linov from the St. Petersburg State University, School of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPSUACE).  Professor Linov and the faculty from SPSUACE will cover the history of St. Petersburg's urban development, an overview of the structure of the city, and lead city tours. City officials and private development officials are brought in to discuss the team project.
